• it is distributed across many cooperating machines
  
  
• it has a uniform namespace
  
  
  • uniform means that you have the same view of the data no matter where you are in relation to it
    
    
  • e.g. the name, "Stanford.EDU" is the same no matter where in the Internet you use it, and the DNS returns the same information when you use it
